“FIGURE IT OUT!” Once my MOST HATED Navy Term!

Today was the kind of day that I didn’t realize I needed.

As I’m journaling, I started looking through all of the things that I wrote and said that I was to do. Numerous pages of empty promises stared back at me.

I wondered why I hadn’t done what I said I would do.

There was NO EXCUSE for not accomplishing something I promised myself I would.

After self-berating myself for about an hour, I finally went back to a time when I was being initiated as a Navy Chief. During this time, I was kicking my ass kicked left and right, and I was entirely fed up. I was constantly told to talk to the Chiefs and ask for help.

Finally, I started to go out on a limb for some assistance from the backbone of the Navy, and I found myself requesting assistance from one Chief Struely. I was trying to figure out some mundane task, and I was tired of overthinking everything. Putting my pride aside, I asked Chief, “Can you help me?” [figure out some pain in the ass task]. He answered “FIGURE IT OUT!”

When I heard this, I SNAPPED! I always hated that term, and here I was asking for help, just to not be helped. Well, at least I didn’t see it that way. The Chief was right. After accepting that this may just be what I needed to hear, not only did I figure it out, but I also stopped dreading this “negative term.”

You see, “Figure it out” is a power statement, suggestion, order, etc. When you apply it, I mean trying apply it, you will accomplish whatever the hell you want to accomplish. When you decide to “Figure it out,” you give yourself permission to achieve that which might have been unimaginable.

Over the past few weeks, I have decided to embrace this simple concept, and things have been going great; even when things are not all too great, I can and will “Figure it out.”

If you believe in yourself, you too will always “Figure it Out!”
